Experience the special flair at Christmas time.
No other region in Saxony is as famous for its Christmas rituals as the Erzgebirge with its unique tradition of wood art and toy making.
In a large number of craft workshops that are still preserved today, you ll be able to look over the shoulders of the master craftsmen as they work and experience the traditional craft at close quarters: tyre turning in a Seiffen toy-making workshop, lace-making in an Annaberg parlour, the production of incense candles with the popular Christmas scents and the baking of Erzgebirge Christmas stollen.
The mining parades and processions as well as Mettenschichten in the strongholds of the former silver mining industry are particularly moving. The traditions and customs in the Erzgebirge are many centuries old and endure in Saxony's culture.
Christmas Land Erzgebirge:
The Erzgebirge is the cradle of German Christmas traditions. For centuries, nutcrackers, candle arches and incense smokers have been made of wood here, creating a cosy atmosphere during Advent. In various craft workshops, you can look over the shoulders of the master craftsmen at work and experience the traditional craft at close quarters: tyre turning in a Seiffen toy-making workshop, lace-making in an Annaberg parlour, the production of smoked candles with the popular Christmas scents and the baking of Erzgebirge Christstollen.
